Baby K is my first child, so you can imagine when it came to compiling my baby shower list I was on the laptop reading reviews and researching every baby item imaginable.
Now that he’s nearly 2, *sobs* where has 2 years gone, and he’s growing out of some of his gizmos and they’re getting stashed in the loft till we decide to have baby no. 2 I thought I’d put a list together of all the things I found the most useful during the first nearly two years of parenting.
1. Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine
Funny story, my aunt brought this for me as a baby shower gift. I saw it in action at the Baby Show and was not impressed, to the point where I was like “it’s just going to be another piece of equipment taking up space in my kitchen.” I even convinced my cousin, who was also expecting at the time that it was a waste of money! Ask me now, it’s the best thing ever!
As a newborn baby K was one of those babies that just could not wait for his milk, to the point that he would cry like he was in pain, he still is very dramatic! I didn’t breastfeed for very long, it might sound selfish to some but breastfeeding on demand wasn’t for me, so I implemented a routine pretty early on. So getting back to the prep machine, in the beginning I did the whole hot water flask thing, waiting for it to cool down, you know the drill. The machine was still in its box. Then one day I was like right lets get this thing out and seriously best thing EVER!
It prepares your milk to the exact temperature within minutes. You can adjust the amount of ounces you need via a little dial at the top making sure you have the exact amount of water needed. There’s a filter inside the water dispenser, which you change when required, which makes sure there are no nasties in the water being used. It really is a necessity when you have a hungry, crying baby and you need a bottle fast! Highly recommend!
You can purchase the Perfect Prep Machine from Mothercare for £120.00 but keep an eye out because it usually goes on offer.
2. Bloom Fresco High Chair
OK this high chair is a little bit on the pricey side, my friends all pulled together and brought it for me and I think they paid £300, but I love it! It’s stylish, I chose it in the black with a coconut white insert (insert sold separately) so it matches my dining room, and you can use it from birth till your little one is roughly around 4 years old. I love this high chair because it meant that baby K could be sitting with us during meal times from the minute he was born. In order to be suitable for babies you can purchase the newborn snug which provides extra cushioning making the chair more comfortable.
As baby K gets older you can drop the height of the chair and remove the tray, allowing you to push the chair closer to the table so he can sit with us and feel more included during dinner times.
We purchased ours from The Baby Show from Peppermint Nursery which was great as we were able to haggle and get the newborn snug for free!
3. Orbit Baby G2 Buggy
When I was looking for buggies I knew this would be the one for me. I mean purchasing a buggy is like buying a car! Is it functional? Will it fit my lifestyle? Is it pretty? How long can I use it? The questions are endless.
The reason I went for the Orbit Baby G2 is because it’s compact – It takes up hardly any space in my boot, the frame folds and the seat sits neatly on top creating a little square shape, perfect. It has a one hand fold so it doesn’t take forever to collapse if it’s pouring down with rain outside. It’s functional – the seat rotates 360 degrees meaning if I need to turn baby K around I simply squeeze the two little levers on the side of the seat and around he goes! It comes with a bar across the front with a tray for any snacks and drinks, which I always get compliments on, and it has loads of accessories which again are all usable. I purchased the side panniers as an extra, these are little shopping baskets which hook on to the side of the buggies frame, Mr H initially thought these were a waste of money BUT I proved him wrong. In the summer we take a lot of walks to the park and these have come in handy for carrying extra blankets or simply if we decide to make a quick stop at our local supermarket. It grows with you – if you decide to have another baby, the Orbit Baby goes from a single to a double stroller by simply purchasing their Helix Plus upgrade kit or if your first child no longer needs to sit in the buggy and you have a second child you can always purchase the Sidekick Stroller Board which connects to the side like a skateboard.
4. MAM Anti-Colic Milk Bottles
OK don’t get me started on the dreaded C word…Colic!
Baby K was hit with this when he was just over one week old and to describe it in one word – nightmare. Every night between 6pm-10pm he would cry and as a mummy you feel completely hopeless because there’s nothing you can do to ease the pain. That’s where the MAM Anti-Colic bottles come in.
I initially started bottle feeding with the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature range, but my little man was always sucking on the teat so hard that it would invert in to itself. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying this was the cause of his colic, it probably wasn’t but I wish I went with an anti-colic bottle from the first time I decided to bottle feed. The teat collapsing on the Tommee Tippee bottles was a bit frustrating so I started researching other brands when I came across MAM bottles. The anti-colic bottles are easy to dismantle, clean and put back together so it’s not too much of a hassle. A few other great points are that they’re self-sterilising, the shape of the teat meant that it didn’t collapse so baby K could drink his milk without being disturbed, the bottles have cute little designs on them which is always nice, and they’re BPA free.
MAM Anti-Colic Milk Bottles can be purchased at most Boots and Mothercare stores.
5. Silver Cross Pop Stroller
We brought this stroller when we had our first wedding to go to, baby K was around 3 months old and I knew we wouldn’t have enough space to use our Orbit Baby buggy so we decided to buy a stroller. We figured it would also come in handy when going on holiday, which it did! I opted for the Silver Cross for a couple of reasons the first being that the seat lays completely flat making it usable from birth and as baby K was still little this was handy. The second reason was the maximum weight it holds is on the higher end meaning we can use it till he is roughly 4 years old. The third reason is it was on sale and who doesn’t love a bargain, I believe we purchased ours from Mothercare for £100 which you can’t really go wrong with as it’s a pram which we’ll get a lot of use out of as well as maybe using it in the future for baby no. 2.
6. Summer Infant Swaddle Pod
Swaddling your baby isn’t for everyone but I’m one of those mums who swaddled. I found baby K slept better, if I left him unwrapped he would constantly startle in his sleep which would wake him. I mean can you imagine coming out from a small space like your belly, I know we don’t think we look small but you know what I mean, to all of a sudden an abundance of space, it’s pretty shocking! So I opted to swaddle and because baby K is born in June I wanted something light and easy to use so I purchased the Summer Infant Swaddle Pod for £9.99, you simply place baby in to the swaddle, tuck his arms in and zip, easy!
7. Motorola MBP36S Video Monitor
My Motorola video monitor really puts my mind at ease especially as baby K used to have his day time naps in his bedroom when he was a newborn so he could become familiar with his room for when we eventually moved him in to it. This monitor has a number of handy features on it such as a two way speaker, the camera can pan the entire bedroom as well as a 2 x zoom, it has a few lullaby’s programmed on, although I never really used this, and you can also have two cameras programmed to one monitor if you have two children in separate rooms.
8. Fisher Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse
A friend of mine brought this for us as a gift and it was amazing! The tummy of the seahorse lets out a light glow when pressed along with around 10 mins worth of lullaby’s and wave noises to soothe your little one to sleep. It’s fairly small so can easily be carried around with you, we took it with us to our first Oxford Street trip to help baby K sleep whilst walking around and it worked a charm! I believe she brought ours from Hamleys but it can also be purchased from Boots for £18.99.
9. Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Travel Bottle Warmer
This bottle warmer was a must when out and about with baby K when I switched over to formula. You can no longer ask for boiled water in coffee shops or restaurants due to health and safety reasons and I never like pre-making his milk as I was usually out for most of the day shopping. The Tommee Tippee Travel Bottle Warmer would keep boiled water warm for up to 6 hours allowing me to give baby K a fresh warm bottle of milk when it was time for his feed. I also found it handy for his puree meals especially if I was using pre-made baby food as it would allow me to heat it up slightly before giving it to him.
10. Bright Starts Comfort and Harmony Vibrating Bouncer
I had originally purchased a baby swing for baby K to use when downstairs but my cousin gave me her Bright Starts Comfort Harmony Vibrating Bouncer, which I left at my mums to use when visiting her and would you believe it little man preferred the bouncer to the swing. So began the search for the same bouncer for our house! The bouncer has a large cradled seat with a lot of cushioning around it making it comfortable for baby to relax in. It also has a soothing vibration as well as seven melodies which helped little man nod off without any fuss on many occasions, when awake there is a bar going across the top with cute little toys hanging off it. I would highly recommend this bouncer to parents to be.
So there you have it, my top 10 baby items from when baby K was well a baby! What would be your must have items for parents to be?
A little note – I have in no way been paid or approached by any of the companies mentioned above, I am simply sharing my thoughts on products that I have purchased and used myself!
